Counsel Ximena Herrera-Bernal (London-International Arbitration) was featured as a "Voice of Experience" on The Glass Hammer, an online community designed for women executives in financial services, law and business.
She explains how her multicultural background offered plenty of advantages as it successfully relates to a diverse clientele. She also stresses that it’s important to recognize the smaller achievements of one’s life. “Starting my career in Latin America, where barriers for women are perhaps more evident than in more developed countries, forced me to developed a thicker skin for the challenges of being a woman lawyer” she says.” “Every time you overcome a new challenge, realize that you can do it and do it right, even if you were initially unsure. That makes you become a better professional. Those moments are ultimately just as important and rewarding as the major milestones we tend to focus on.”
Ximena also notes that women have plenty of advantages when it comes to dispute resolution and having the perspective to view situations from a different angle. “It is imperative to believe in your abilities and to make your views appropriately known,” she says. “When you’re doubting yourself, imagine that you are giving advice to a female friend who is experiencing the same issues. Then listen to your own advice.”
