Tsegaye Laurendeau Named “Rising Star of the Month” by Africa Arbitration

Senior associate Tsegaye Laurendeau (London-International Arbitration) was named “Rising Star of the Month” by Africa Arbitration for February 2019.

Africa Arbitration is an association designed to project the arbitration industry and jurisprudence in Africa. It aims to showcase some of the intelligent and experienced arbitration practitioners that Africa has to offer to the international arbitration community. This initiative is coming ahead of the projected rise in investment activities in Africa, which is expected to lead to an increase in the settlement of disputes by arbitration.

Born and raised in Ethiopia, Tsegaye has worked on numerous investment and commercial arbitrations, including proceedings conducted in accordance with the ICSID, ICC, LCIA, CRCICA, HKIAC, and UNCITRAL Rules. He notably acted on many disputes related to Africa, primarily in the oil and gas sector and the telecom industry. Before transferring to our London office in 2015, he practiced in our International Arbitration team in Paris.

Tsegaye was also recognized in this year’s edition of Who’s Who Legal: Arbitration – Future Leaders, which notes that he is “highly experienced in investment arbitration” and is recognized for his “remarkable cross-examination skills.”

With a 50-year history of advising African clients, Shearman & Sterling is a leading firm for dispute resolution in Africa and is currently ranked Band 1 in that area by Chambers Global.
