Shearman & Sterling Participates in Legal Clinic for Military Veterans

In honor of Military Appreciation Month, Shearman & Sterling partnered with members of the Dell Technologies Legal Department and the Austin Bar Association to facilitate a legal clinic in Austin, Texas to support and advise military veterans.

Doug Lawrence from the Austin Bar Veterans Assistance Program provided an on-site training for both Shearman & Sterling and Dell volunteers on how to advise and assist veterans on topics including real estate/property, probate, credit issues, family law and a variety of other legal issues.

“We are so proud as a firm to be able to participate in such a worthwhile pro bono program and to join with the Dell Technologies legal team in this effort,” said partner David Whittlesey (Austin-Litigation). “We know Dell is equally committed to pro bono and we are very pleased that they have chosen to be our partner in this program.”

Located at the Austin VA Outpatient Clinic, nine Shearman & Sterling and Dell volunteers had the opportunity to sit with our veterans, discuss their concerns and provide much needed legal advice on a variety of issues affecting them. Two of the members from Dell’s legal team who attended the clinic were veterans themselves, having been classmates together at West Point.

“It was great to be able to help these vets. The pro bono work we participate in is always rewarding, but as a veteran myself this one hits close to home,” said associate Montana Ware (Austin-Emerging Growth), an Air Force veteran.  “A small sacrifice on our part made a meaningful impact on their lives, and being part of that contribution means a lot.”
