Shearman & Sterling Among Top Five Latin America ECM Firms

Latin Lawyer named Shearman & Sterling as one of the top five law firms in equity capital markets (ECM), based on the number of deals the firm advised on in 2019.

The publication noted that Shearman & Sterling was involved in seven transactions for a combined deal value of $3.5 billion. “2019 was an exceptionally strong year for equity capital markets transactions in Latin America. [It] can in many ways be characterised as a return of the equity capital markets,” São Paulo-based partner Roberta Cherman told the publication. “After many years of low deal volume, both by number and value, 2019 saw many initial public offerings (IPO) across various jurisdictions and industries,” she added.

Latin Lawyer also highlighted the IPOs of Chilean retailer Cencosud Shopping, the country’s largest-ever, worth just over US$1 billion; and Peru’s Intercorp Financial Services (IFS), which raised US$414 million in the New York Stock Exchange. The firm advised on both transactions.

She also noted that “IFS Group is one of the largest financial conglomerates in Peru and it was the first listing of a Peruvian company on the New York Stock exchange in the last six years.”
