Global Investigations Practice Ranked 6 in GIR 100

Shearman & Sterling’s excellence in investigations was recognized today by Global Investigations Review, which ranked the firm No. 6 in its inaugural GIR 100, a guide to the world’s best firms for international investigations.

According to GIR, the guide “profiles 100 firms that the GIR editorial team has assessed as experienced and busy enough to be viewed as a trusted pair of hands for corporates who discover possible wrongdoing of the type that could turn into a crisis.” Each firm in the GIR 100 is included only after GIR’s editorial team has vetted their current and past work to establish that they have gained experience at the highest level.

“We are very appreciative that Global Investigations Review, the leading investigations publication, acknowledged the depth and breadth of our investigations practice,” said Adam Hakki, global head of the firm’s Litigation practice. “Our recognition in this area is the result of the hard work of an experienced, dedicated and growing team and, most importantly, the client-focused approach that drives everything we do.”

Added Creighton Condon, the firm’s Senior Partner, “This ranking is a tribute to the excellence of our investigations practice and echoes the positive feedback we have been hearing from our clients.”

In the GIR 100, the firm’s profile notes that “Shearman & Sterling’s investigations capability is built on impressive foundations,” citing our pioneering work in FCPA matters in the mid-1970s and our historic work supporting the US government in creating the financial tools for the release of Bay of Pigs prisoners from Cuba in 1962 and US embassy hostages in Iran in 1979.

The profile also highlights our work supporting financial institutions and our FCPA work, as well as our successful representation of Todd Newman in a landmark insider trading case—in a decision that has narrowed the definition of what constitutes insider trading.
