Shearman & Sterling has appointed Lawrence Baxter as the firm’s Chief Technology Officer (CTO). In this position, Baxter will lead the firm’s Global Technology Function and play a key role in shaping technology and technology-related innovation across the firm. Based in New York, he will report to Kenneth Johnsen, the firm’s Chief Operating Officer & Chief Financial Officer.

A native of the UK, Baxter has spent more than 20 years leading large-scale global technology functions for companies experiencing growth and the implementation of new business models. He possesses deep knowledge of cloud computing, mobile, data analytics, marketing technology, security and compliance, application development and IT transformation. His expertise includes guiding technology departments through transformational change, connecting technology to changing business needs and prioritizing and aligning technology-related costs.

Most recently, Baxter was the worldwide CTO of Young & Rubicam Group where he was responsible for the transformation of technology from a back office support function to a critical business partner. Prior to Young & Rubicam Group, Baxter held a range of global Chief Information Officer and operational roles, including positions at J. Walter Thompson, Ogilvy & Mather, and WPP Group Plc.
