A Message to our Global Community From Shearman & Sterling’s Executive Group

Acts of intolerance, persecution and violence based on race, gender, identity, beliefs, status or orientation are abhorrent to us as individuals and to our values as a Firm. We want to speak out as a Firm to condemn such acts of prejudice. We also must continue to act, through our commitment to diversity and inclusion, corporate social responsibility and our pro bono work as lawyers, to combat intolerance and discrimination.

Recent data in the United States indicate that violence and intolerance are on the rise. As a disturbing example, attacks on Asian Americans reportedly increased by more than 150% in large U.S. cities in the first quarter of this year. More recently, the Anti-Defamation league has reported a disturbing surge in anti-Semitic violence and hostility in the U.S. These acts, and equally all similar acts targeting race, gender, identity, beliefs, status or orientation are abhorrent, and this trend is of deep concern to us as a global law firm.

In the face of such reprehensible violence and hostility, we must steadfastly confirm that our commitment to fostering a diverse, inclusive and safe environment for our people, our clients and our communities is unwavering. The need for this commitment from lawyers especially is more essential than ever. As a Firm we strive to show this commitment not only through words, but through daily action as we continue to address injustice and oppression through our critical pro bono efforts. Recent events make it clear that as a Firm, and profession, we can and must do more.
