Partners Li Chen (Beijing/Hong Kong-Mergers & Acquisitions) and Matthias Weissinger (Frankfurt-Finance) spoke at the 3rd Annual China M&A Forum organized by AVCJ and Mergermarket in Shanghai on October 18, 2018.
Li moderated the panel “Chinese Outbound: Venturing Into New Markets.” The panel focused on the trends of Chinese companies seeking deals that support the One Belt One Road initiative (OBOR) and local economic growth. Discussion topics included the opportunities and sourcing of interesting deals; sectors that align best with OBOR; the role of private equity in M&A deals; and the key challenges when entering emerging markets.
Matthias spoke on the panel titled “China and Europe Cross-Border M&A: Realizing the Potential” along with Tanguy Lesselin, CEO of Finquest, and David Russel, Managing Director of Vermilion Partners. Discussion topics included geopolitical factors affecting China-Europe cross-border M&A in the past 12 months; the development of foreign direct investment control regimes at the national level and at the level of the European Union; the most promising sectors for Chinese and European cross-border M&A; the opportunities for investing in distressed European companies; the potential benefits and pitfalls of distressed M&A transactions for Chinese investors; and the values that European private equity firms bring to Chinese companies when they invest in Europe.
