Shearman & Sterling hosted a U.S. Sanctions Rules seminar on November 20 in Beijing.

Partner Philip Urofsky (Washington, D.C.-Litigation) presented on how to navigate through complex sanctions programs and ensure adequate compliance measures in place by drawing on real case studies. Partners Lorna Chen (Hong Kong-Investment Funds), Li Chen (Beijing/Hong Kong-Mergers & Acquisitions), Sean Wang (Hong Kong-Project Development & Finance) and Nils Eliasson (Hong Kong-International Arbitration) also participated in the discussions on how U.S. sanctions would affect non-U.S. companies.

The discussion covered:

  • The scope and application of U.S. sanctions and export controls laws
  • Case studies of recent imposition of sanctions and export controls restrictions on non-U.S. companies
  • Consequences for your supply chain procurement and customer relationships
  • Enforcement and secondary sanctions risk
  • Intersection of imposition of sanctions with corruption enforcement
  • Is there a U.S. DOJ “China Initiative?”

The seminar was followed by a cocktail reception.
